From the Preaching Minister

August 20, 2008

Labor Day weekend will mark 10 years of worship within the new construction and we are hoping to receive letters, emails and or phone calls from some who have a story to relate concerning the old and new buildings, someone who was strategic to the ongoing ministry of Mt. Zion within the community of Winchester and this world. Please email me @ kennyspeakes@hotmail.com or send me your comments via phone @ 859-771-8087 or letter at Kenny Speakes – 36 Boone Avenue – Winchester, KY. 40391. We hope to share these special memories with our present worshipers. It should prove to be a great day in the Lord.

Who would have thought that Jesus would compare himself to the lifting up of the brazen serpent Moses lifted up in the wilderness? On their way up out of Egypt they continually complained against God and Moses. This was in fact the eighth occurrence of such behavior. After being bitten by fiery serpents which God sent among them, the Hebrew children had to look directly at the brazen snake which was signified and was the result of their sin. Their sin, their complaining against God was their mistake, their demise. Such was the case with Adam when he said it was the WOMAN that GOD gave him. How often we try to blame our ills, our difficulty, our problems on someone else and this too is sin and even worse, it is sin which is added to our already saturated area of failure. Many times we seem to enjoy adding insult to injury by not standing up and taking the blame we so rightly deserve.

Jesus told his disciples that when he was lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent; he would draw all men unto himself. When Jesus was lifted up on the cross, he became sin for us and we must look directly at that sin and recognize fully the height, depth, length and breadth of our sin. Only then may we begin to find mercy and obtain grace.

This Sunday we will continue looking into the word of God as our source for direction. Many good books are written and yet only one may prove to be our guide, our light, our motivation to do better, and more now than ever. Let us all study God’s word so we may not be ashamed of continually doing wrong those things God gives us to perform rightly and that not out of a thought towards repayment of sins forgiven but rather out of a heart filled with dedication and love.

This Sunday we will look into the life of John the Baptist as his dedication rose to such intensity as to cost him his head. I hope to testify to the power behind John’s baptism of Jesus, John’s disciples leaving him to follow Jesus, John’s imprisonment, the biggest question of John’s life and his beheading.

The answer to one of the most frequently asked questions concerning John the Baptist is found in Jesus words recorded in the 8th chapter of the gospel of John, verses 31 & 32: 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

But many will say: "John was left in prison for telling the truth, following God, denying himself and then he beheaded at the hands of an adulteress and her daughters seductive dancing. Where is the will of God in such a conclusion to a life dedicated to God?"

Come Sunday as we intend to take a closer look at a man whose life was given to total service to God, what it cost him and what could it have been worth. Begin reading the account of John the Baptist from Matthew 3 & 14, Mark 6, Luke 1 & 3 Numbers 6 & John 3 & 4.

For the Cause of Christ,

Kenny
